Time to come out...of the spiritual closet

Enough of this term “woo woo.”  Enough I say!

In 1989 I came out of the closet as a gay man. This was not a great time in history to be out. At the height of the AIDS crisis, in the midst of the very conservative first Bush administration here in the US, I decided I could no longer pretend to be something I wasn’t. I was tired of denying my authentic queer self and needed to live in truth. This was twenty years after Stonewall. 

On its fiftieth anniversary we celebrate those who came before us and how far we have progressed. My eighteen-year-old self could never have imagined getting married or an out presidential candidate. So much to honor and celebrate!

Whether you are queer or not, there is another closet for you exit. The one I’m speaking of is…Yup, the spiritual closet!

I’ve gotten so used to hushed murmurs regarding transcendental experiences. I’ve gotten so used to people pretending that metaphysical experiences don’t really happen. I’ve even gotten used to being made fun of for my word of the day, gratitude sharing, pranayama, and meditation practicing self. But no more.

I’m a spiritual being on this planet enjoying a human experience! I bet you are as surprised by this declaration as my parents were when I came out as gay. Ha!

No matter what your religion or how you identify, as humans we are on a quest for personal growth and self-actualization. That in itself is a spiritual experience. So why then do you degrade it? Why do you use derogatory terms like the aforementioned “woo woo” to discuss the fascinating things you just don’t fully understand?

The research and study of the natural world is science. The research and study of the human experience is spirituality. We are energy. Everything is energy. Science explains that. So again I ask: Why are you scared to come out as spiritual?

Many astrologers believe the Age of Aquarius began in 2012 when the March equinox point moved out of the constellation Pisces and into the constellation Aquarius. In its infancy there is a revolution taking place in front of your eyes. Across the globe spiritual issues have moved front and center. Shifting into a new paradigm, there is a movement that crosses philosophies, religions, nationalities, and even gender and sexual identity. Eastern and Western thought is converging; Love can end the division and suffering in the world.

I know you are thinking, “Are you out of your mind? With all this divisiveness in the world right now?” Fear is the opposite of love. What you are witnessing and partaking in is the remnants of The Age of Pisces, which was primarily about power and authority.

Now don’t worry, wisdom isn’t about believing or not believing in anything I just wrote. However, being honest about who you are is paramount. And that means it’s time to stop pretending to not be a fully spirited consciously evolving creative being. So stop with words like “woo woo” and any others that apologize for fully embracing the human and spiritual existence.

So yes, come out of the closet. Declare your passionate, creative, loving, and inner work studying self and join the spiritual revolution.
